The official Sony Xperia Twitter account was feeling playful earlier this week when it posted a cryptic tweet that many have assumed alludes to its rumoured upcoming flagship smartphone, the Xperia Z5.
In the tweet Sony tells us to “Get ready for a smartphone with greater focus. All will become clear on 02.09.2015”, along with a photo of a blurry – but still recognisable – Xperia handset taking a photo of a famous landmark.
So what does it all mean? There’s not too much to go on, but we’ve donned our detective hats and set about to crack the code.
A case of identity
First of all, what makes us think that this tweet is about the Xperia Z5? Although the tweet indicates a new smartphone is coming, it doesn’t necessarily mean it will be part of the flagship Xperia Z range – Sony could, after all, be hinting at a new Xperia M device, for example.
However, the phrase “with a greater focus”, along with the image of the smartphone taking a photo strongly implies that we’ll be getting a device with a new and improved camera.
Thankfully it appears that Sony is done with copying and pasting the same camera into its flagship phones, and it would be unlikely for Sony to make this big step in one of its less premium Xperia lines.
The Xperia M4 Aqua, for example, made do with a 13MP camera – so we’d be surprised if Sony was making a leap in camera tech for anything less than a Sony Xperia Z model.
So why the Z5 and not the Z4? Well, in case you’re not paying attention to Sony’s… let’s say “interesting”… Xperia launch strategies (and we won’t blame you if you’re not), the Sony Z4 has already been launched, though it’s only called the Z4 in Sony’s native Japan.
For the rest of the world we got the Z4 under the name Xperia Z3+, so unless Sony wants to confuse things further by having a Z5 in Japan and a Z4 in the rest of the World, it looks like Sony will stick with one model name for now. Praise Kaz Hirai!
A study in time and place
There are also a few clues to where we’ll get more information about this mysterious handset. To be fair you don’t have to be Sherlock Holmes to find the date, as Sony has been quite clear that we’ll see more on September 2.
If that date rings a bell it’s because it is just before IFA 2015, Europe’s largest electronics trade show. We’ll be there in force – it’s the perfect arena for Sony to announce a new flagship smartphone.
September 2 is also the date that Sony will be hosting an event at IFA 2015, making it even more likely that it will be showing off a new handset, and to really make waves during IFA it will need to be one hell of a device. A flagship device to be precise, most likely called the Xperia Z5.
An open and shut case then? Well, one last clue seems to confirm the time and place of Sony’s upcoming handset; the landmark showed in the tweeted photo is the Brandenburg Gate, which is found in Berlin – the city that IFA 2015 is held in.
Xperia Remote Play, my dear Watson
So with our diligent detective work it looks like Sony is preparing to show the Xperia Z5 with an improved camera at IFA 2015 in Berlin… you could use another popular phrase using the word ‘Sherlock’ in it.
However was there any additional information we could glean from the culprits who posted the tweet? We contacted Sony, but it remained tight lipped, telling us only that “Nothing else to say … but keep an eye out… :)”.
