In an apparent move to spur sales of two of its smartphones, Microsoft is sweetening the pot by including free software. The company is now offering a free one-year subscription to its Office 365 Personal suite to anyone who buys a Lumia 950 or Lumia 950 XL smartphone.
Applications in the Office suite include Word, Excel and PowerPoint. A year’s subscription to the suite usually costs $70. The company made a similar offer last year to purchasers of its Lumia 640 and 640 XL phones. The offer also comes with one terabyte of OneDrive cloud storage that’s valid for a year.
The offer is good on Lumia 950 (pictured above) or 950 XL that are registered between November 20, 2015 and June 30, 2016. Microsoft announced the offer on its devices blog this week. The offer is available in the United States, the United Kingdom, Germany, France, Denmark, Finland, Norway, and Sweden.
Free Display Dock
The Lumia 950 XL also comes with a free Microsoft Display Dock when the phone is purchased unlocked. That offer is available until the end of this month, or while supplies last. By connecting the phone to the Display Dock and enabling the Continuum technology, users can work on Office documents from their smartphones.
This isn’t the first time Microsoft has tried to nudge sales of the Lumia 950 line with incentives. Last fall, the company discounted the phones by $50 in some international markets.
Users can activate the free Office subscription by first opening the Lumia Offers app, which details all the offers currently available for their devices, on any qualifying Lumia 950 or Lumia 950 XL, or downloading it from the Windows Store. Then, users choose “1-year Office 365” from the list of available offers, enter their e-mail addresses and press Continue for instructions on how to claim the subscription. From there, users can enjoy access to their favorite Office apps and 1 TB of OneDrive cloud storage, valid for one year.
Windows 10 Coming
Microsoft said the Lumia 950 and Lumia 950 XL are the most powerful smartphones the company has ever made. The 950 handset offers a 5.2-inch Quad HD display and a Qualcomm Snapdragon 808 hexa-core processor, while the Lumia 950 XL has a 5.7-inch Quad HD display and a Snapdragon 810 octa-core processor. Both come with Microsoft’s Cortana and Continuum services.
Redmond also has apparently started making the Windows 10 Mobile software update to Lumia smartphone owners in some Latin American countries. The company earlier this week made available the latest version of the mobile OS to the Microsoft Lumia 640, and it is now seeding the update to the less expensive Lumia 535.
The tech giant also recently began seeding Windows 10 Mobile to owners of the Lumia 640 on the T-Mobile network in Poland, indicating that Windows 10 Mobile is on its way to most, if not all, Lumia models. The Lumia line of smartphones has previously run on Windows Phone 8.1
The Lumia line of phones was developed by Microsoft and Nokia, and debuted in 2011. Microsoft took the line over when it bought Nokia’s mobile device business two years ago.
